#5 WARUNG MASTOK
First opened back in 1962, this warung originally started off as a little stall inside Pasar Kreneng (the market), but they did such a roaring trade that a move to new, bigger digs was necessary.
Still going strong, Warung Mastok is a cheerful little place, with tables set inside off the street. Humming and happy, there’s often music playing and the bench seats are usually packed with locals who come here for the same thing I do: the mie pangsit.
The mie pangsit special is the way to go: a hearty bowl of handmade egg noodles with hard boiled egg, sliced chicken liver, chicken bakso, shredded chicken, beef mince, pickled cucumber and chilli, all dished up with a bowl of simple clear broth. I did say hearty!
The menu features a myriad of good bakso (meatball) options, including bakso campur, which is a mixed meatball soup of both chicken and beef, tofu stuffed with minced beef and egg noodles, served up with a side of pangsit (wontons).
It’s definitely worth trying the rujak here too. Like a savoury fruit salad, the shredded fruit (green mango, pineapple, cassava, etc.) is doused in a fiery dressing made of chilli and palm sugar.
