#6 WARUNG SURAMADU (SATE KAMBING BATAN SABO)

This warung has been here since 1975, so I’m pretty sure that they’ve got their signature dish of sate kambing (goat sate) down pat. Watching the small sates being cooked on the open grill beside the street, the scent wafts inside and certainly makes my heart water in anticipation.

Served up on a plate with a generous dressing of sweet ketchup manis sauce, the sates actually turn out to be a little overcooked and dry. Helped along by the delicious sauce and deep fried shallots, they were still very tasty though, and remind me of the tongsen I had in Jogja.

What I really love about this warung is its history. Since it’s humble beginning in 1975, it has since turned into four warungs across Denpasar – all run by the family’s children. It’s this kind of street food story that makes me seek out places like this. Here’s hoping that my kids will be just as keen to follow in my footsteps. So far only my oldest daughter Cinta shows any interest in cooking with me, but hey, the other two are very small so there’s still time!
